WASHINGTON – US Government authorities have concluded that the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic poses an “unreasonable” health risk to workers and communities near PET plants – raising serious questions about the fate of the country’s domestic polyester industry.
PET plastic is used to make beverage bottles and polyester clothing, however, its production releases a toxic chemical known as 1,4-dioxane.
The US Government has now ruled that 1,4-dioxane poses an “unreasonable risk” to the health of PET plastics workers and community residents whose drinking water has been polluted by discharges from PET plastics factories.
