YANGON – Plain clothes police officers are targeting union leaders in Myanmar following last week’s protests against the military coup. Local accounts say 20 union leaders, the majority from IndustriALL affiliate Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM) – including its vice president – are on the military’s wanted list after peacefully protesting for democratic rights. The news raises questions for brands sourcing from Myanmar, with many having codes of conduct which request that suppliers recognise unions.
IndustriALL claims police have issued arrest warrants for 20 union leaders, the majority from the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar (IWFM), including the union vice president, Soe Lay.
