LONDON – Mike Barry, director of sustainable business (Plan A) with Marks & Spencer, is to step down from his role at the end of June, having been with the UK retailer for 19 years. Barry led the ground-breaking Plan A sustainability strategy which spawned a series of (poorer) imitations and remains one of the most far-reaching and ambitious sustainability strategies of any global retailer. The Plan A strategy was launched in 2007, at which time it outlined a series of 180 commitments intended to make M&S the world’s most sustainable retailer. Barry will be replaced by the firm’s current sustainable business manager, Carmel McQuaid.
