BRUSSELS – The European Commission has launched a three-month public consultation seeking feedback on measures to tackle pollution from microplastics. Textile industry stakeholders are being encouraged to have their say, given that microfibres from clothing make up a sizeable proportion of all microplastic pollution in oceans and waterways. Launching the consultation, the Commission said the problem is “significant,” pointing out that between 200 000 and 500 000 tonnes of synthetic fibres from textiles are released into the marine environment each year globally.
