LONDON – A former employee of Better Cotton has told environmental non-profit Earthsight the platform is plagued by data manipulation. The whistle-blower also revealed flaws in Better Cotton’s processes, exacerbated by conflicts of interest and a lack of accountability within the scheme.
The revelations follow Earthsight’s Fashion Crimes report, published in April after a year-long investigation. The report exposed links between H&M and Zara’s supply chains and cotton produced by agribusiness giants SLC Agrícola and the Horita Group. These companies are involved in illegal deforestation, land grabbing, and conflicts with traditional communities in the Brazilian Cerrado.
