LONDON – A new video claims high-street fashion brands are greenwashing by claiming that producing polyester clothes made from recycled plastic bottles is a sustainable option. Produced by Changing Markets Foundation, jointly with plastic pollution campaigning organisation City to Sea, the video claims that making polyester clothing from recycled plastic bottles is simply adding to fashion’s waste crisis and further flooding the natural environment with plastics.
Big brands such as H&M, Primark and Zara are accused of greenwashing with their claims, while most companies examined indicated they aim to achieve their recycled polyester targets by using polyester from downcycled PET bottles.
