PHILADELPHIA – US retailer Urban Outfitters has become the latest apparel business to warn about supply chain and inventory challenges as the global pandemic continues to cause chaos in garment hubs. As well as huge increases in the costs of shipping, many fashion retailers are facing a battle to even get container space and are shifting to the use of expensive airfreight to avoid long delays.
Meanwhile, the world’s second largest exporter of clothing, Vietnam, is in the midst of a strict lockdown which is being supervised by armed forces on the streets of major cities.. Vietnam’s garment sector has come to a standstill at a time when it would normally be shipping huge amounts in readiness for the festive season.
