Security concerns dent confidence in Ethiopia textile sector

MEKELLE – Just 700 out of more than 2,000 workers employed at Ethiopia’s Mekelle Industrial Park have returned to work because of security concerns from the on-going war which broke out on 4 November 2020. The park closed because of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, before war broke out. H&M supplier DBL garments is among those which have been looted and destroyed.

The situation in Ethiopia is threatening the development of the country’s textile industry, with brand confidence being eroded over security concerns in the country.

In recent years, the Ethiopian Government has encouraged foreign direct investment (FDI) in the RMG industry and other light manufacturing, invested massively into enabling infrastructure, and set up ten special economic zones, “industrial parks,” across the country.
