SBTi proposes use of carbon offsets for Scope 3 emissions

LONDON – The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has released a draft of its revised Corporate Net-Zero Standard for public consultation, with a notable shift in its approach to carbon credits and Scope 3 emissions. The new draft proposes allowing companies to use carbon credits to address residual emissions beyond their direct and value-chain emissions reductions. This represents a significant development in corporate decarbonisation efforts, particularly given the ongoing debate over the effectiveness and integrity of carbon offset schemes​.
