LONDON – The environmental impact of cashmere depends more heavily on herd productivity and management practices than on whether goats are raised in nomadic or farmed systems. This s according to a major new Life Cycle Assessment from Textile Exchange.
The study, the first widely accessible and comprehensive LCA of cashmere production, draws on primary data collected from 170 herders and farmers in Mongolia and China. It covers goat rearing, cashmere collection, transport, scouring and dehairing, and includes separate assessments of soil health and social conditions.
