SEATTLE – A recent investigation by Stand.earth Research Group (SRG) claims to have uncovered a significant link between the global fashion industry and controversial practice of fracking. The report reveals that more than 100 major fashion brands source fabrics derived from fracked oil and gas in the Permian Basin, Texas.
SRG’s findings, based on customs and import/export data, company disclosures, and investor presentations, trace the journey of ethane—a byproduct of fracked natural gas liquids—through its conversion into polyester and subsequent use in garments. SRG has created a ‘Fracked Fashion Map’, a digital tool allowing users to explore these connections by brand or parent company.
