GENEVA – Uzbekistan’s cotton sector appears to have taken another step towards coming in from the economic cold. The latest International Labour Organisation (ILO) report on Uzbek cotton suggest forced labour has now been almost completely eradicated from the country’s annual cotton harvest, with an estimated 99 per cent of those involved in the 2021 cotton harvest having worked voluntarily.
The ILO report claims an estimated two million children have now been taken out of child labour and half a million adults out of forced labour since the reform process of the Uzbekistan’s cotton sector began seven years ago.
