PARIS – France’s National Assembly has voted to restrict the use of highly polluting PFAS “forever chemicals” in a range of industries, including textiles. The move is particularly significant for manufacturers of waterproof clothing. The ban, set to take effect in January 2026, aims to eliminate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from garments where safer alternatives exist.
Safer alternatives certainly do exist for outdoor clothing in terms of water repellence. They are not so effective at oil repellence and this, along with higher costs, has been one of the stumbling blocks to their widespread use across the outdoor sector.
