BRUSSELS – Chemical recycling of polyester textiles remains far costlier than conventional production, with falling virgin PET prices widening the gap.
A new European Commission study estimates the total cost of chemically recycled PET produced through solvolysis in Europe at around €2,150 per tonne, with a range of approximately €1,650 to €2,650.
By comparison, prices for virgin and mechanically recycled PET generally ranged between €1,500 and €2,000 per tonne in 2021-22, before falling to between €1,000 and €1,700 during 2023-24.
