DHAKA – Bangladesh’s main garment industry trade body has opposed the implementation of the newly agreed International Accord in Bangladesh, claiming the existing, domestic RMG Sustainability Council is the only “licensed entity” to oversee safety issues for the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector.
Last week, European signatories to the former Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh renewed their agreement to continue legally-binding commitments to workplace safety in Bangladesh and other countries under the guise of a new body, the International Accord.
However, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) claims the new International Accord will have no legal function in Bangladesh and its remit is “null and void.”
