LIMA – Peruvian institutions with close ties to the Government in Peru, such as the International Alpaca Association and Association of Exporters, have called on the Sustainable Apparel Coalition to retire the ‘score’ given to alpaca fibre in its controversial Higg MSI.
In a letter to the SAC, seen by Apparel Insider, the two bodies raise serious questions about the validity and trustworthiness of the Higg score given to alpaca which, standing at 320, is a remarkable nine times that of polyester.
The letter says the government of Peru is in the process of commissioning new lifecycle assessments on alpaca and argues that, until these are ready, the dubious score for alpaca being used on the Higg MSI should be immediately removed.
