NEW YORK – New figures show Bangladesh’s ready-made garment industry has the most green factories in the world – but factory owners are disappointed that Western buyers won’t pay extra for green production. Recent figures show Bangladeshi now has 24 platinum-rated LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) factories, six of which are among the the top ten in the world. However, an owner of a garment factory which supplies many leading Western brands told Apparel Insider that factory owners were naïve to believe apparel brands would pay increased prices for apparel from green factories, and added that buyers had never asked or pressured them to implement such changes.
