YANGON – Ten global unions are calling on the UN Security Council to impose sanctions against military leaders responsible for the coup in Myanmar. The unions want to see the isolation of commander-in-chief senior general Min Aung Hlaing and other military leaders responsible for the military group, which is threatening to cause brands to pull out of Myanmar’s garment sector. A return to economic sanctions against Myanmar, led by the US, is a serious threat if Myanmar remains under military rule.
IndustriALL Global Union, the International Transport Workers’ Federation and International Trade Union Confederation are among unions, which said in a statement that, “Sanctions must also target economic capital which provide the military with its revenue.”
