ACCRA – New claims suggest significant amounts of imported clothing that passes through Kantamanto market in Ghana’s capital, Accra, ends up in landfill “almost immediately.” An exposé on what is the world’s largest second-hand clothing industry has shown the extent to which poorly made clothing from the West is flooding local markets, with large amounts of it being unusable going to the landfills surrounding Accra each week.

Among findings by UK broadcaster ITV were a toxic waste clothing mountain 30-foot high, containing – ironically – a Marks and Spencer Recycling Shopping bag.

Accra has the largest second-hand clothes market on the planet, and the report claims their biggest supplier is the UK.
