BANGALORE – The International Sericultural Commission (ISC), an inter-governmental organisation engaged in the development of the sericulture and silk industry across the globe, has registered an official complaint to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in Washington about silk’s score on the Higg Index of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition.

In the complaint, it is claimed that silk as a fibre is unfairly and inaccurately represented on the Higg Material Sustainability Index (MSI). “In simple terms, the Higg Index indicates that silk is 30 times worse than polyester in terms of environmental sustainability factors,” the complaint states.

The ISC presents a dossier of evidence to support its claim that silk has been misrepresented by the MSI. Other natural fibres sectors will be watching this case with close interest.

The FTC governs, among other things, false advertising claims.
