COPENHAGEN – Leading global apparel brands used the 10th Copenhagen Fashion Summit this week to announce a raft of (yet more!) sustainability initiatives. There was talk of now being the ‘time for action,’ ‘accelerating change,’ and the sustainability ‘journey’ which – while laudable – also brought with it an overwhelming sense of déjà vu.
Meanwhile, a side-event hosted by the Sustainable Fashion Research Agenda tackled the real issue the global fashion industry faces – overconsumption. The SFRA event took place ahead of the Copenhagen Fashion Summit and tackled the issue which global executives and their bean-counters are simply not ready to face.
