BONN – Germany’s used textile collection and recycling system has reached a “tipping point” due to falling clothing quality, rising contamination and collapsing reuse markets.
A new study from German recycling association bvse found that the amount of used textiles collected in Germany increased by around 50,000 tonnes between 2018 and 2023 to reach 1.3 million tonnes. But the value and quality of that material has moved sharply in the opposite direction.
