EDINBURGH – A new report claims the production of clothing for high street and online fashion brands in Europe, the UK and USA is causing the devastating pollution of Africa’s rivers due to the discharge of untreated wastewater and lax environmental enforcement.

The study focused on Ethiopia, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius and Tanzania, where the rapid growth and strategic importance of textile and apparel production coincides with significant water challenges.

Many fashion brands opened sourcing operations in Africa in recent years due to the cost benefits. Asian manufacturers operate most of the larger garment factories in African sourcing hubs.
