LONDON – A new report by the influential Changing Markets Foundation has laid bare the global fashion industry’s huge dependence on fossil fuels – and urged sweeping EU legislative action.
The report claims the global fashion industry has become “dangerously dependent on cheap synthetic fibres,” which are made from fossil fuels such as oil and gas.
Moreover, the rapid growth in synthetic fibres, such as polyester, is driving runaway consumption, creating an escalating environmental catastrophe, with yet unknown health consequences, the report claims.
The authors suggest the EU must now take “urgent legislative action to bring the textile and apparel industry in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal.”
