YANGON – The military has seized power in Myanmar after detaining civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior members of her governing party. The military have claimed fraud in last year’s elections to justify the move, which has seen all authority given to the top army commander and a one-year state of emergency declared.
The move has potential significance for the country’s garment sector with the country having previously been subject to economic sanctions due to its military links. Brands and retailers have only resumed sourcing operations there in the past decade.
