ADDIS ABABA – Global apparel brands recently met with the Ethiopian government along with local unions and employers to discuss wages and other labour issues in Ethiopia’s textile industry. Among brands attending were H&M and PVH, both members of IndustriALL Global Union’s ACT (Action, Collaboration, Transformation) initiative which provides a strategy for linking purchasing practices with wages for garment workers. IndustriALL is calling for living wages in Ethiopia’s rapidly growing garment industry, however, the industry remains beset by chronically low wages and high staff turnover.
