LEICESTER – Local authorities in Leicester turned a blind eye to the fact that garment factories in Leicester were operating with impunity throughout the lockdown. This is the concerning claim of Manzoor Moghal, chairman of The Muslim Forum in Leicester. Moghal say local police “lectured dog-walkers for venturing out too far to beauty spots” but allowed sweatshops to operate without batting an eyelid.
The claims come as online retailer Boohoo this week said it had begun a review of all its garment factories, including “a full audit of all of our suppliers’ manufacturing facilities.” Boohoo is the most significant buyer from Leicester’s garment sector.
