MOSCOW – The main trade body for the Italian footwear industry has defended the decision of some of its members to travel to Moscow for a trade fair. Around 50 Italian footwear companies travelled to the Obuv ‘Mir Koži fair in Moscow in April, with Russia being a huge market for the luxury apparel and footwear sectors. Critics have slammed the decision, given that many global companies are now imposing sanctions on Russia because of its attack on Ukraine. However, the president of Assocalzaturifici, Siro Badon, said that while the association respects the sanctions imposed by the international community, the Russian and Ukrainian markets represent more than half of turnover for some Italian footwear companies.
