STUTTGART – Following the discovery of significant deficiencies at Intertek, a Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-approved Certification Body, partially suspended certain operations in Intertek’s activities. As a result of the suspension, Intertek is restricted from issuing Transaction Certificates (TCs) for specific products. Additionally, Intertek is prohibited from taking on any new clients, regardless of their operational scope.
In a press note, GOTS said the renewal of Scope Certificates (SCs) is allowed only if the scope does not involve ginning, spinning, or trading of lint cotton and grey yarn. Moreover, no expansions of SCs are permitted during this suspension period. This suspension will remain in effect until Intertek demonstrates compliance with their contractual and certification obligations.
Intertek has been given 90 days to report its findings and actions to both the Global Standard and their Accreditation Body (AB). The suspension could pose challenges within the value chain, particularly for those certified by Intertek or with value chain partners certified by Intertek.
Unlike a withdrawal, a suspension is an opportunity for the Certification Body to show a commitment to addressing issues within their systems. The primary goal of suspending a Certification Body is to maintain the integrity of the GOTS system and the goods certified under it.
GOTS in a statement said its main objective is to ensure all organisations that use and rely on GOTS can continue to do so confidently and that the move is essential to maintain trust in the Standard.
