ABERDEEN – The UK Government needs to set up an independent watchdog to tackle abusive purchasing practices in international supply chains in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry. That’s one of the recommendations of a new paper by the University of Aberdeen and Traidcraft Exchange UK, based on observations of purchasing practices in Bangladesh amid the global pandemic.
The paper considers the impact of Covid-19 on women working in the RMG industry in Bangladesh. The researchers found Covid-19 increased vulnerability for workers in this sector, while legal protections and grievance mechanisms were “limited.”
