TEXAS – Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) tied to textile fibres have risen around a fifth in five years, according to new modelling from Textile Exchange. The group says the spike mirrors record fibre output, which reached roughly 132 million tonnes in 2024 across all markets, the equivalent of around four tonnes of fibre produced every second. Between 40 and 75 per cent of that volume is estimated to flow into fashion and home sectors.
The figures illustrate the scale problem facing brands that signed up to Paris-aligned goals a decade ago, and which appear unable to decouple growth from emissions.
