DHAKA – Garment factory representatives in Bangladesh have proposed a new minimum wage of BDT 10,400 (US$94) per month for garment workers. The figure comes in at less than half the amount being sought by unions. It follows months of behind the scenes wrangling between factories and worker representatives after a tripartite board was set up in March to review the minimum wage for garment workers.
The last time garment workers had a pay rise was when pay increased to BDT8,000 (US$75) a month since 2019. The workers’ representative in the minimum wage board for garment workers has proposed Tk 20,393 (US$185) as the minimum monthly salary.
