BRUSSELS – Europe’s textile sorting and recycling industry is facing a crisis that experts warn could trigger a domino effect across the entire sector – with far-reaching consequences. The European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC) and Municipal Waste Europe (MWE) have released a joint statement highlighting the challenges this industry faces, calling for urgent financial and legislative intervention from the European Union.
The current crisis, which recently saw German recycler Soex go bankrupt, has its roots in several global disruptions. These, suggest the statement, include the ongoing war in Ukraine, supply chain challenges in Africa, and the rise of ultra-fast fashion, which has drastically changed the global market for used textiles.
