HAWASSA – New research has found thousands of Ethiopian garment workers at Ethiopia’s flagship Hawassa Industrial Park lost their jobs in the first half of 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic. Researchers contacted almost 4,000 female garment workers and found that 41 per cent of respondents employed at Hawassa in January 2020 were put on leave or terminated by the time of a follow-up survey in July. “Among those, almost no one has found other employment,” says the researchers.
