ACCRA – Proposed new EU laws around textile waste will, “make Waste Colonialism an official EU doctrine,” a prominent African waste management specialist has claimed. The European Commission recently announced amendments to its Waste Directive which will see the introduction of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules in EU states if passed by the European Parliament. However, the Ghana-based Or Foundation claims the amendments will “not stop waste colonialism” because they are not, “based on a sound understanding of the structure and practices of the global second-hand clothing trade.”
