BEIJING – China has announced the first batch of cotton from Xinjiang harvested under its new ‘sustainable’ cotton standard. China officially launched its own rival cotton standard to the globally dominant Better Cotton Initiative earlier this year. The ‘Cotton China Sustainable Development Program’, launched by China Cotton Association (CCA), said at the time the homegrown standard and certification system aim to “counter the West’s dominance that has posed serious threat on China’s cotton industry.
Western brands have been boycotting cotton from Xinjiang due to concerns about forced labour and human rights abuses in local cotton supply chains.
