DHAKA – Bangladesh’s leading apparel trade body has called for greater contractual protection for its members after many were left woefully exposed amid cancelled orders during the coronavirus pandemic.
Discussing a way forward beyond Covid-19, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president, Rubana Huq, said: “I believe the pandemic has revealed the vulnerabilities of the sector. At present, contracts are very loose with buyers. Only 44 per cent of buyers offer Letters of Credit. We need to be sure what we are offering and what buyers are offering.”
