DHAKA – The minimum cost of manufacturing apparel products in Bangladesh will be benchmarked by industry trade bodies in an effort to ensure ethical prices from fashion brands and bring an end to “unhealthy price competition locally.” The work will be carried out by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA), and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BKMEA). The move comes amid decades of downward price pressure on Bangladeshi garment manufacturers by fashion retailers, which impacts wages for garment workers as well as limiting the ability of factories to invest in sustainable operations.
