SYDNEY – The escalating problem of clothing waste in Australia is being addressed in a new scheme being led by the Australian Fashion Council (AFC). Figures provided by National Clothing & Textiles Waste Roundtable on the issue recently showed that 800,000 tonnes of textile waste now gets sent to landfills in Australia. Such are the volumes involved that even Australian charities are now disposing of 24,000 tonnes of clothing annually, while a further 105,900 tonnes of second-hand clothing is exported overseas to be sold or discarded.
