Advanced ETP removes 99.95% of microplastics in study

PARIS – A recent study investigating microplastic (MP) removal in an advanced wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in France revealed promising strides in mitigating environmental contamination from synthetic such as polyester. The plant, located in Cap Sicié and serving a large population, demonstrated consistently high microplastic removal rates across various seasons, effectively preventing most microplastics from entering the Mediterranean Sea. The findings highlight the role of sophisticated effluent treatment plants (ETPs) as a crucial barrier against microplastic pollution, particularly from urban sources such as synthetic textiles—a major contributor to environmental plastic debris.
