AUCKLAND – Researchers in New Zealand have found that cotton textile waste can be broken down to produce biogas. The findings raise the prospect of another end-of-life route for natural-fibre clothing that cannot be reused or recycled.
The University of Auckland study tested cotton, wool and polyester-cotton blends using anaerobic digestion. This is a process already widely used to treat food waste, farm waste and sewage sludge.
