BRUSSELS – More than 150,000 workers in the apparel and footwear sectors of Cambodia – mostly women – have lost their jobs as a result of declining orders from apparel brands and retailers. Many more are expected to do so in the coming weeks as the full impact of coronavirus unravels, according to local trade bodies.
“Consequently, millions of Cambodian citizens could fall back into poverty due to this crisis,” claim the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC), the Cambodia Footwear Association (CFA), and the European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (EuroCham) in a joint letter to the EU this week.
