WASHINGTON – The United States should extend its presumption of forced labour to cotton fabric imported from Vietnam. The call comes amid new claims that Vietnam has been importing Xinjiang cotton to supply increased market share, helping China bypass the US sanction prescribed in the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. The claim is that Vietnam is in effect laundering Xinjiang cotton.
The call has been made by The Alliance for Vietnam’s Democracy, an alliance of several Vietnamese organisations. The Alliance claims cotton and cotton-based yarn, textiles, and finished garments grown and manufactured for export in the Uyghur Region are being transported from the region to Vietnam and other locations before being shipped internationally.
