HONG KONG – US retail giant Walmart has been caught up in the controversy around Xinjiang, China after one of its retailers, Sam’s Club, was accused of removing products sourced from Xinjiang. The issue came to light late last month after internet users on Chinese social media began accusing Sam’s Club, the warehouse retailer owned by Walmart, of removing all Xinjiang-sourced products from its app in China. Sam’s Club is a members only warehouse club.
The Chinese Communist Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) said in a statement that, “Pulling all products from a region without a good reason hides a hidden agenda,” and added that Sam’s Club would “get a taste of its own medicine.”
