DHAKA – The High Court of Bangladesh has imposed a six-month ban on Nirapon, an alliance of 23 US apparel brands which was set up to oversee building inspection, remediation, and monitoring of listed apparel factories in the country. The petitioner’s lawyer argued in court that the role of factory safety lies with the RMG Sustainability Council, a tripartite compliance and safety monitoring body of the apparel sector, which will be formally set up on November 25 by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers Exporters Association (BGMEA). The High Court has Nirapon to explain why it should not be ordered to join the RMG Sustainability Council.
