SYDNEY – Efforts to boost transparency in Australian wool supply chains are evidenced by new data which shows that almost 70 per cent of the Australian wool clip is now declared under the National Wool Declaration (NWD). The initiative was introduced in 2008 to provide information to the market in response to inquires from users and buyers of Australian wool. It provides information on mulesing status and Dark and Medullated Fibre Risk (DMFR) which is then transferrable along the pipeline and is used by buyers of Australian wool in their purchasing decisions. In Tasmania and Victoria, the declaration rate is over 80 per cent and increasing, according to figures released by Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX). The figures also show about 13 per cent of the declared wool comes from non-mulesed flocks, and this figure is increasing year on year in response to growing demand from brands.
