LONDON – Unions, NGOs and civil society groups have written a joint letter to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson urging his Conservative Government to protect Leicester’s garment workers and improve regulation of big fashion brands. Led by Labour Behind the Label, the letter calls on the government to protect all workers in the Leicester garment industry and ensure that remedy, including payment of unpaid wages and benefits, is provided to those who have been the victims of wage theft, furlough fraud, unsafe environments, and modern slavery.
The letter points out that nobody as yet mentioned practical support for workers, despite revelations that many have been paid less than half of the minimum wage over the past decade. Neither the government nor the responses from Boohoo have offered any remediation to workers, the letter points out.
