DUBLIN – The owner of one of the world’s most successful fashion retailers, Primark, has defended the fast-fashion industry by claiming that shopping on the high street is more environmentally friendly than online as it reduces the amount of delivery vans, “puffing their way up and down [the] street.” Primark is one of just a handful of major retail chains that does not have its own online store – a strategic decision which does not appear to have done its sales any harm.
George Weston, chief executive of Primark parent company, Associated British Foods, told the Times the scale of Primark’s global operations meant it had “one of the world’s best supply chains and we don’t air freight the goods, we ship them, which has far lower emissions.”
