LIMA – The Peruvian alpaca industry has called for answers from the Sustainable Apparel Coalition as to why its Higg Index continues to penalise natural fibres, such as alpaca. In a week when the International Alpaca Association staged its annual summit, a new video was issued claiming the SAC has refused to provide full transparency of Higg MSI data relating to alpaca – despite the intervention of the Peruvian government. The video also demands answers from the SAC as to why Higg continues to ignore microplastic pollution from polyester as well as discounting soil degradation, an area where natural fibres compare extremely favourably to polyester.
