OSLO – Concerns have been raised in the Norwegian Parliament about whether the EU’s planned labelling scheme, Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) represents an existential threat to apparel made of natural fibres. PEF is a proposed common method for measuring the environmental and climate footprint of various products, including clothing and footwear. PEF was presented for consultation earlier this autumn and, as it stands, penalises wool and other natural fibres vis-à-vis their synthetic counterparts.

Those close to the process claim the Higg MSI of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition provided the datasets which will underpin PEF. SAC is the lead of the technical secretariat for the PEF.
